Awesome free (scary) games you should play

Kay, thought I would start a thread like this, as due to the loss of free time I don't really play too much retail or big games on my PC, nor my xbox. This led me to try out some free titles that are not as time consuming, and some of them baffled me to no end, by actually how much they were awesome. I was going for horror games, which seemed like a hopeless idea, but to my greatest surprise some of these managed to scare or startle me at times, so watch out for them.

 

 

 

Yume Nikki

This is an exploration game made by RPG maker, that doesn not contain any RPG elements... Weird eh? It only gets more weird. It caught my attention on /x/ where lotsa people loved it and talked about it, so I went ahead to try it myself. Despite the game having a pretty solid fanbase for being disturbing and scary sometimes, there were 2 moments that actually scared me. One of them is seen on the picture, it's the Uboa event which is hard to trigger, but is worth all your time trying (just look it up), while the other was a giand octopus... thing appearing out of fucking nowhere in the white desert area, that i didn't even know about. Anyways, it's an exploration game, where you go around in a girl's dreams and collect effects like having a bike, turning into a street lamp, turning into a severed head, a faceless ghost... Lots of weird effects. your goal is to collect all 24 of them, and then watch the ending, which is quite melancholic. It took a bit to figure out some things, but got tedious after a while, so I looked up a guide for it, and it didn't spoil anything, it just helped.

 

Anyways, this game is not for everyone. It's a love/hate type of game which will either amaze you, or piss you off. I say give it a try.

Fiend

...is a game made by some members of the game studio called Frictional Games. If the name doesn't ring any bells, these guys are the ones who developed games that made pretty much everyone scare their pants off, games like the Penumbra series and of course, Amnesia. This is one of the 2 little-known games they made that I know about, and I still can't find a link to the other one, so I tried this.

 

The game stars some guy who is sent to a mine to investigate it, which is located in Psychoville (joke). You can see many similarities with Penumbra (mine, wolves, adventure elements, running from enemies instead of fighting them), but this game is a classic GTA-like overhead shooter mixed together with point-and-click adventure puzzles (doesnt require a mouse). The graphics and animations are minimal but satisfying, and the sound quality is terrific. First I thought that, come on man, this game will never be scary. And for someone who was never even startled in Dead Space, and only a few times in Doom 3, I pretty much jumped at the part when you had to investigate the mine.

 

Didn't play too much with it, because the puzzles are just hard, so is the exploration and I feel pretty hopeless in my current progression through the game. The fact that there's no walkthrough for the game makes it hard to finish, but I don't think it's anything near impossible, and if you go to their forum, the developers are happy to help you. They even gave out the source engine in a simple reply to a request.

Eversion

well, here's a little exception in the list, this game is your run-on-the-mill cutesy platformer, where you complete the levels with platforming and um, everting the levels. You can only evert at certain places and there's no indication where you should do that, so this makes it the more challenging. Every time you evert, the world will shift into another version, and will become more grey and dull to the point of HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK GETOUTTAMYSCREEEEN!

 

Yeah, no exception here, and don't let it fool you, this game actually made me jump because I was careless enough to think it was just another super mario clone. There are 2 endings to it, based on if you collected all the gems in all levels or not. Out of all these games, maybe you should start with this one. Bricks will be shat.

This is a first person adventure game with full 3D environment and movement, and with a film-noir-ish art style that reminds me of a 3D Limbo. It's easy to play, but the puzzles can be mindbending, since you're looking for certain objects that are small for the most part. It has a walkthrough on youtube for both endings, but the game is so short, that you should really stick to your own solution. Just remember, every room you unlock has something important in it, just have a VERY good look around.

 

It does look creepy from the beginning, but it only gets worse later. I won't advise watching the solution because that might spoil the scare for you. I was able to complete it in like 5-10 minutes, so be patient. The plot involves you, the player to escape a house that has only locked doors and a chained exit, and you'll have to find your way out. Don't really need to know anything else, since it's super short. Just download it and shit your pants.

The only scary thing about it is its difficulty, which is um, take the words FUCKING INSANE, then multiply them with BATSHIT CRAZY. I love to play this game when I'm bored, but the good thing is, it always makes me ragequit and it still feels awesome. The only game that nears its difficulty is Super Meat Boy, but SMB is a wuss compared to this masochistic platformer. The Kid was even in SMB, and had his own warp zone. That warp zone took me around 3 hours to complete. 3 hours for 3 one-screener levels. Wow.

 

So, this game has double-jumps, insane hazards (like apples falling upwards), lots of deception to make you burst out with rage, and moments from some of the best NES games (Street Fighter 2, Metroid, Zelda, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, etc) incorporated into the gameplay. The graphics and the music is very appealing, but imagery and music with sound effects are also imported from these games, making it a tribute to all the great hard ones, and becoming the motherfucker of the hardest ones. Like in Super Meat Boy, it's a very refreshing and rewarding feeling if you actually make it to another savepoint, so it is worth a try. But all the patience in the world man, you will need it.

I played I wanna be the guy so much @.@ got quite far but then cba'd.

 

Actually downloaded it again and i've gotten far again xD but it makes me want to smash my desk but its so fun too lol.

 

Might check out Which. Looks good, although i will probably scream like a child.
