London riots

Some of you made have seen the news about all this, but none more so than me who has been watching the TV like a hawk and listening to the radio all morning.

- Several fires broke out in Croydon, including one at a large sofa factory which spread to neighbouring buildings and tram lines

- Police found a 26-year-old man in a car in Croydon suffering from gunshot wounds. He is in a serious condition in hospital

- In Hackney 200 riot officers with dogs and mounted police were located around Mare Street where police cars were damaged

- The area's MP, Diane Abbott, said a London-wide curfew should be considered

- Looters raided a Debenhams store and a row of shops in Lavender Hill in Clapham, as well as shops in Stratford High Street

- Police used armoured vehicles to push back more than 150 people in the Lavender Hill area

- A Sony warehouse in Solar Way, Enfield, a shopping centre in Woolwich New Road, a timber yard in Plashet Grove, East Ham and a building on Lavender Hill were all on fire

- More than 100 people looted a Tesco store in Bethnal Green, the Met said, and two officers were injured

- Cars were set on fire in Lewisham

- A bus and shop were set alight in Peckham

- Buses were diverted as the violence spread to Bromley High Street

- There were reports of looting of phone shops in Woolwich High Street, in south-east London, and set a police car on fire

- Shops and restaurants were damaged in Ealing, west London, and there was a fire in Haven Green park opposite Ealing Broadway Tube

- Carling Cup matches at Charlton, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bristol City, which were due to be played on Tuesday, have all been postponed at the request of the police

- A friendly between England and Holland at Wembley on Wednesday was also called off

- At Clapham Junction looters stole masks from a fancy dress store to hide their identity

Just to put some personal perspective on it, as most of you know I not only live in England but in London, though, thankfully, not directly in the areas affected. However the violence has been spreading and it's highly possibly it will reach my area (here's to hoping it doesn't...) You can see on the map where Woolwich is - well I live about 5 miles from there. I only live 11 miles from Hackney, where this all kicked off. I am hoping the riots will stop now, after 3 days of it, and although I haven't seen any of the rioting I know more than enough people who live directly in the middle of the areas, people who are vibrant and strong who are now scared as shit to come out their house just to go to the local shop. If, of course, the local shop hasn't been burned down to the ground. For example, a local pub, one which I have been in plenty of times, in fact just the other day:

http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/2291/riotresult1.jpg

used to be this pub: http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-great-harry

taken by one of my work colleagues. It's disgusting. And it's the local youth who are causing all this. But it can't be just blamed on them, there have been grandparents seen looting shops as well. Heard stories on the radio this morning of people who were driving, having to not stop because rioters were trying to smash their cars up while driving down the road. Vehicles overturned and burned down. Homes, as well as businesses, completely destroyed, including people I know. This is an absolutely shit world we live in, and this is one day I am ashamed to be British.

EDIT:

Also, see in the picture under the Bethnal Green tag, there's a white blob under the "th" just under the river? That would be The O2 Arena, where I work. Fml.

Looks like I was working so hard the world could've ended for all I know and I wouldn't even have noticed it. Actually, I was a drunk lumberjack the whole weekend and a very hungover insurance agent on monday, but still, this was happening in the last 3 days and now is the first time I ever hear about it.

People were always this stupid, looks like the masses love some riot for whatever reason. In Hungary about 5 years ago, it became a monthly habit to burn trashcans and get hosed by the riot police in the capital and why? Fuck you, that's why! The real reason was because one politician had a speech at a closed event where he was swearing at his colleagues for how much they fucked up our economy and need to do something about it, and someone felt it necessary to leak a footage of it. Our next riot will probably be because a character will die in their favourite soap opera or something.

I've heard a lot about this and actually was waiting for this thread. Was interesting how are you in this situation.

Well... Unrest began in Tottenham, right? Migrants mostly live in Tottenham, and I don't think what you have any reason to be ashamed.

It's noteworthy what british restraint and tolerance knows no limits. There isn't a word about racial or ethnic rioters or the problem of migrant in british sources.

I think great what ppl aren't silent about police's problems and etc(in contrast to Russia), but not way of destruction and burning. This is even a little comical, couse ppl who really love London cant act such way. Firstly, it's a problem of migrants.

Our next riot will probably be because a character will die in their favourite soap opera or something.

I lol'd

I just don't understand how this all got so large scale so quickly. It's not even just London, there's been similar violence in other cities, like Birmingham.

And I don't like the idea of thinking of migrated people, especially as in London about half the population is predominantly now african-oriented, being the sole cause of the issues. Because that's touching upon racist grounds I don't wish to be treading on.

However that being said, I think the government has become too weak. Police CAN'T do anything because they don't have the power, we're a country wrapped up in politics and political correctness, and I personally blame that on a lot of what is happening.

Idk. The London's news is on the top as well as falling US economy and the arrest of Tymoshenko.

Do you like it or not. This version is the main on our radio, its not my idea even.
