Occult/The Unidentified

A few months ago, I came on the server and started speaking about a movie called Noroi - The Curse. Some people thought they'd go and see it, and the feedback was pretty favorable, so I thought I'd post about this movie, which is from the same director, and is a bit similar to Noroi.

This one is in mockumentary style too, with handheld cameras and all. It's labelled as a horror flick, buuuuuuuuuuut meh. While Noroi was able to scare the shit out of me without using any jump-out-of-your-seat scenes, this one was just there. I hesitated about posting it here, but then I thought those who have seen Noroi would be interested, so here it is. The film is on youtube, and this is pretty much the one and only way for everyone to see it in english. In fact, I doubt you'd be able to track down a raw japanese copy of the DVD, and an english subtitled one doesn't even exist as far as I know. So enjoy this rare crap here:

(note that you can see the subtitles by pressing that CC button thingy near the full screen button of the window, you can also follow the film in this one window I think, after the segment finished, just press on the next segments picture)

A few words before you go on watching it expecting a masterpiece or a piece of shit, it's neither and it's both. The movie is not so much of a horror as it was intended to be, but rather a really good mistery movie about paranormal activities. It builds up stuff much slower than Noroi did, but I never found myself being bored. The plot is interesting and engaging, though it lacks the depth of characters. Some cameos of famous japanese people are here and there, like a manga artist and -holy shit- Kiyoshi Kurosawa himself, the guy who directed those magnificent "thinking man's horror" movies such as Cure and the original Pulse (Kairo). It's about a documentary crew that investigates a strange murder at a holiday resort, and interview the survivors and injured ones, discovering the great mistery that led to the tragedy and foreshadowing something darker. It does not follow the same formula as Noroi, always looking around, having a lot of characters and telling the tale through them. It rather does the same for 10 minutes, then focuses on one person and his surroundings. Pretty cool if you ask me.

The movie must have been made from an extremely low budget though. Sound effects are not even used, which was fine, but the music was lackluster. It's filled with ambient noise music, that create a creepy atmosphere, but not all of the songs are that good at that, and when I heard the same track for the fifth time It was really cheesy. The visual effects throughout the movie are great. They are cheap as hell and minimalistic (pretty good combo if you ask me), and they certainly did their best to make it seem good despite the low budget. That is, until the movie reaches its last 2 miserable minutes... The last scene is, without spoiling anything, nothing but a ridicoulous dogturd. It's that bad. It should have not even been done at all, or they should have followed the same formula they used for the rest of the visual effects. The damn thing looked so ridicoulous, that it made me laugh out loud, and the song over the credits didn't help me take it more seriously either.

Watching this movie feels like this:

You are sleeping with your girlfriend. Once, she awakes, and thinks you're asleep, while you're not really. She wants to give you a very hot and pleasant surprise, so she silently undresses, while you pretend to be asleep. When she's naked, she slowly crawls up on you, then turns around, forces her anus into your mouth and lets a long warm and juicy fart into it.

And you know what? Despite all that, I still dig this film. It was a great mistery movie with a surprisingly Lovecraft-ish theme, and it never bored me in its 2 hours of runtime. Despite the ridicoulous ending, that may ruin the film for some watchers, I suggest watching it. Just forget about that fart of an ending, though its taste will not go away for some time...
